Surat Yohanes yang pertama memang penuh dengan ajaran2 singkat yang seolah-olah tidak berhubungan satu dengan yang lain, seperti mengenai pengampunan dosa, penebusan, jaminan keselamatan, si anti-Kristus, akhir zaman, bagaimana menjadi anak terang, saling mengasihi, ... Tetapi semua itu adalah bagian dari suatu tema besar, yakni persekutuan yang penuh suka cita. Mulai Friday ini, kita akan memulai seri eksposisi 1 Yohanes dengan format kotbah singkat dilanjutkan dengan diskusi.

You may think that Easter is over. Yes, we had our Easter service but Easter is not over. In fact, this week we commemorate the resurrection of Christ with 2 days of teaching weekend. Far from celebrating Easter differently (like the Eastern orthodox churches :)), we simply want to bring some solid Reformed teaching on resurrection to Dallas. 3 seminar sessions and 2 services by Ev. [From p. 296 of Bavinck’s Reformed Dogmatics vol. 2, in the context of the doctrine of Trinity] "Scripture, after all, has not been given is simply, parrotlike, to repeat it, but to process it in our own minds and to reproduce it in our own words. Jesus and the apostles used it in that way. They not only quoted Scripture verbatim but also by a process of reasoning drew inferences from it."

The holiness of God is a pervasive attribute which needs to be apprehended by Christians. Without any personal and deep understanding of how holy our God is, one will not understand how depraved and unworthy he/she is. A number of biblical figures witnessed the holiness of God firsthand and it changed their lives. Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Isaiah, and Peter - to name a few. In fact the bio of Martin Luther - the great reformer - witnessed such transformation.

From Phil 3:10, we have learned two things on the meaning of knowing Jesus: 1) knowing Jesus is not merely (cognitively) knowing about Jesus, 2) knowing Jesus is to follow His examples as the suffering servant, who is now exalted to the highest position of the Lord of lords. Now let us look at the third point.

Continuing from part 1, what does it mean to know Jesus? We may turn our attention to Philippians 3:7-11. While there are so many things that can be said and learned from this short passage, we may learn at least 3 things on knowing Jesus.

A New Year warrants a new resolution! If you search on the internet, you will find many such resolutions for 2012. For instance, the ranked first resolution is to lose weight (this has been so for a number of years in the US) with close contenders of "getting organized" and "spending less, saving more". While all these resolutions are good, they tend to be driven with a self-centered motive, e.g. to look better, have more money to spend. As a follower of Christ, what should be our New Year resolution?
